On Friday, UN Approves Initiative to Address Map Projection Inaccuracies and Promote Fairer Representations

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The United Nations General Assembly passed an international resolution on Friday aimed at encouraging more precise and equitable portrayals of continental landmasses on world maps. In a recorded vote that garnered backing from 107 member states, the global assembly tackled issues related to cartographic distortions that significantly underestimate the size of Africa and other equatorial regions of the Global South. UN adopts resolution to correct world map representation as diplomatic delegations take formal action to resolve historical biases embedded within traditional cartographic standards.

The initiative primarily targets the widely used Mercator projection, which was created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for maritime navigation. Although effective for maritime directions, the mathematical distortions inherent in the Mercator model cause landmasses farther from the equator to appear disproportionately larger, while regions near the equator are compressed. As detailed in documentation from the United Nations General Assembly, these technical inaccuracies remain embedded in contemporary educational textbooks, news broadcasts, digital mapping services, and government publications worldwide.

During assembly discussions, delegates recognized that cartographic distortions extend into broader socioeconomic and cultural spheres. The assembly observed that visual inaccuracies in scale influence public understanding of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. To address this, the UN endorses the use of equal-area alternatives, such as the Equal Earth projection introduced in 2018, which accurately reflects the relative sizes of landmasses.

UN Approves Action to Correct Distortions in World Map Depictions

This move follows an initiative led by a coalition of African nations and backed by the African Union, which presented the draft resolution in August. Supporters stressed that traditional wall maps showing landmasses like Greenland as roughly equal to Africa cause serious geographical misconceptions, especially considering Africa is fourteen times larger in reality. Reports from the Emirates News Agency emphasized that addressing these historical visual disparities is a crucial step toward creating fairer geographic education worldwide.

Under the framework of the approved resolution, international agencies are tasked with developing technical mapping standards. The assembly urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic and geospatial experts to establish updated cartographic guidelines. These efforts aim to support member states and digital media companies in transitioning toward equal-area projection standards across public and private sectors.

UN Education Agencies Tasked with Creating Precise Spatial Standards

While promoting voluntary adoption of equal-area map options, the resolution does not impose legal restrictions on the use of the Mercator projection or require private tech firms to alter proprietary software. Instead, it encourages member states to incorporate essential cartographic principles into primary and secondary education curricula. Education ministries are urged to raise awareness among students, scientific communities, and publishers about the perceptual biases that different map projections can introduce.

Monitoring of the UN resolution’s implementation will be carried out by international cartographic and geospatial policy groups as educational institutions review textbook standards. Updated digital mapping standards are expected to be discussed at upcoming international geospatial summits. Official records of assembly votes and technical projection specifications remain accessible via UN registry portals.
