The Alaska Earthquake Center documented the event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The seismic event originated approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with seismologists estimating a depth of about 10.6 miles, or 17 kilometers.
