Earthquake of 5.6 Magnitude Strikes Balochistan, Pakistan on October 17

KHUZDAR, Pakistan / AsiaWire.IO / – On Saturday, October 17, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake impacted Pakistan’s Balochistan province, with its epicentre close to Khuzdar. The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported the seismic event, noting it occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, or 6 miles. Such shallow earthquakes tend to produce more intense ground shaking compared to deeper ones of similar magnitude. Early reports did not specify any casualties or damages.

Based in Potsdam, Germany, the GFZ offers swift estimates of major earthquakes globally. Its initial assessments of magnitude and depth are often updated as additional seismic data becomes available. The figures released on Saturday served as the primary source for initial reports about the quake. Khuzdar, situated in central Balochistan, is the largest province in Pakistan by area. Authorities had yet to release detailed information regarding the impact of the tremor in early reports.

Balochistan lies within a seismically active zone along the southern boundary of the Eurasian plate. The Indian plate converges obliquely with the Eurasian plate along Pakistan’s western edge. The region is crossed by significant fault systems, including the Chaman Fault, a left-lateral strike-slip fault, and the Sulaiman fold and thrust belt. Stress accumulation along these structures has historically triggered some of Pakistan’s most destructive earthquakes.

Fault lines contribute to Balochistan’s vulnerability to powerful quakes

The 1935 Quetta earthquake, registering 7.7, resulted in an estimated 30,000 to 60,000 fatalities. A decade later, an 8.1 magnitude quake off the Makran coast caused a tsunami that claimed around 4,000 lives. The 2008 Ziarat earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.4, resulted in 215 deaths. In 2013, a magnitude 7.7 quake centered in Awaran District, adjacent to Khuzdar, led to 825 deaths and approximately 700 injuries.

On October 7, 2021, a destructive magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Harnai District, causing at least 42 fatalities, many of whom were women and children. The quake injured roughly 300 people and destroyed approximately 10,000 mud homes. Satellite mapping revealed over 100 landslides triggered by the event, blocking roads and hampering rescue efforts.

Recent seismic activity highlights ongoing risks in the region

Pakistan experienced several significant tremors in 2026. In August, a magnitude 5.4 quake struck Gilgit-Baltistan near Sost, while in April, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake centered in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush shook the country. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are situated on the Eurasian plate, whereas Sindh and Punjab lie on the Indian plate, making Pakistan vulnerable to earthquakes originating from its northern mountains to the southwestern coast.

Moderate earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 5 to 6, can cause damage to weaker structures near the epicenter. Shallow quakes in this region often produce aftershocks, as seen following the 2021 Harnai event, which experienced aftershocks of magnitude 4.6 and 4.5. Initial reports from Saturday’s earthquake did not mention any aftershocks, but further details are anticipated as local officials evaluate conditions around Khuzdar.
