Berlin, Germany / RankWire.AI / – A government health report published in Berlin confirms that almost 10,000 deaths related to heat occurred in Germany during the first seven months of 2026, marking the highest mortality figure since systematic recording began in 2016. The Robert Koch Institute’s weekly surveillance data estimates that about 9,800 fatalities were associated with prolonged high temperatures from early April to July 19. The Federal Ministry of Health’s public health agency reported that the total number for this year has already exceeded the death counts recorded in any full calendar year over the last ten years.

Germany records 9800 heat related deaths in 2026 report
Meteorological agencies monitor high atmospheric temperature trends across European regions.

A significant increase in deaths was mainly driven by an intense nationwide heatwave during late June, when temperatures repeatedly neared 40 degrees Celsius across multiple federal states. Public health epidemiologists attribute more than 5,000 deaths directly to this extreme weather event, based on surveillance models. Data indicates approximately 810 heat-related deaths from early April until June 21, followed by a spike of 4,310 deaths from June 22 to June 28. The German Weather Service recorded that on June 27, 46 weather stations registered temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Throughout July, mortality numbers remained high as persistent heat affected central and western Europe. The Robert Koch Institute estimates that 7,900 heat-related deaths occurred from early April to July 12, with an additional 1,900 deaths recorded during the week from July 13 to July 19, bringing the total to 9,800. Compared to previous data, this figure exceeds the record set in 2018, when about 8,900 heat-attributable deaths were documented. The 2026 total significantly surpasses the average annual death toll of roughly 2,900 heat-related fatalities recorded between 2023 and 2025.

Public Health Institute Reports Record Heatwave-Related Death Toll

Demographic data from federal health analysts shows that seniors faced the highest health risks during the extended heat periods. Out of the nearly 9,800 total deaths, approximately 7,880 occurred among those aged 75 and above, comprising the majority of the total. A further breakdown reveals around 2,950 fatalities among those aged 85 and older, about 1,320 among the 75-84 age group, roughly 550 among people aged 65 to 74, and approximately 300 among residents under 65. The report also noted a higher mortality rate among women compared to men, influenced by demographic proportions.

Medical experts at the institute highlighted that extreme heat conditions rarely are listed as the sole cause of death on certificates. Instead, prolonged exposure to high ambient temperatures worsen existing chronic illnesses, significantly increasing the likelihood of fatal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and metabolic complications. Epidemiologists use mortality models that combine death registration data from the Federal Statistical Office with daily meteorological records to estimate excess deaths caused by thermal stress. The agency emphasizes that high nighttime temperatures hinder the body’s ability to cool down properly, putting vulnerable individuals under additional strain.

Older Adults Are Particularly Susceptible to Heat-Related Health Risks

Forecasts from national weather services suggest that high-temperature conditions will continue across large parts of Germany through the remaining summer months. Daily maximum temperatures are expected to range between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius across broad areas, with localized peaks reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. Public health agencies and municipal health departments have issued repeated heat advisories, urging care homes, healthcare providers, and families to closely monitor elderly residents, ensure adequate indoor cooling, and promote sufficient hydration during peak heat hours.

This comprehensive data release highlights the increasing challenge to public health posed by recurring extreme weather events in Europe. Health systems and local authorities are actively updating emergency heat action plans to address these threats. As monitoring continues through the summer, the near 10,000 heat-related deaths in Germany offer crucial baseline data for federal health planners, environmental agencies, and emergency responders. Officials anticipate that heat surveillance will remain ongoing through September, providing insight into potential structural measures and urban cooling initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable populations from future heat-related health risks.
