DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – According to the World Health Organization, if adequate resources are allocated, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months. Official data through Aug. 16 indicates 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has expanded across six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This has made it the deadliest Ebola outbreak documented in the country.

WHO incident manager Thierno Baldé noted that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining sufficient staffing, supplies, and operational support. The current response has received roughly $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. During a two-week span, health teams added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 additional epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers. These workers play a critical role in surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referrals. The effort also relies on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across the affected regions.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. In mid-August, Ituri remained the primary hub of transmission, accounting for most confirmed cases and fatalities. Officials have observed that many new infections lack any known connection to existing patients, emphasizing the urgent need for quicker case identification and contact monitoring. Surveillance efforts have been expanded to identify infections earlier and facilitate rapid patient transfer to treatment centers.

Response efforts extend across the affected regions

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare declared the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since the virus was first identified in 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Health authorities in Uganda also reported cases linked to the broader outbreak, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been reported there after June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Treatment strategies focus on early diagnosis, supportive care, infection prevention, and swift contact tracing. Efforts include safe burials and community outreach to curb further transmission. Local health workers assist in identifying suspected cases and directing patients to treatment facilities. Authorities have provided hygiene materials and trained community personnel. Early supportive care remains vital for patients showing Ebola symptoms.

Monitoring and funding are key to control efforts

Contact tracing saw improvements in August but continued to fall short of public health goals in some regions. By Aug. 12, response teams tracked 17,460 of the 20,740 contacts listed, around 84%. Additional epidemiologists have been deployed to enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers also report suspected cases and facilitate access to medical care. During the outbreak, over 150 health workers have been infected, highlighting the risks faced by medical personnel.

On May 17, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Ongoing efforts by national authorities and international partners include laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement. Recent weekly reports indicate a rise in confirmed cases and fatalities compared to previous periods. Baldé emphasized that the three-month containment estimate depends on securing the necessary resources to sustain these activities. The teams continue to operate in insecure areas and regions with disrupted health services.
