As of August 2023, Ebola Cases in Congo Surpass 5,000 Amid Growing Response Efforts

    August 19, 2026

According to the World Health Organization, if adequate resources are allocated, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could be contained within three months. Official data through Aug. 16 indicates 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The outbreak has expanded across six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This has made it the deadliest Ebola outbreak documented in the country. WHO and Congo health teams strengthen surveillance amid the expanding Ebola outbreak. WHO incident manager Thierno Baldé noted that the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining sufficient staffing, supplies, and operational support. The current response has received roughly $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. During a two-week span, health teams added more than 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 additional epidemiologists, and mobilized over 500 community health workers. These workers play a critical role in surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referrals. The effort also relies on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across the affected regions. Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, making it the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. In mid-August, Ituri remained the primary hub of transmission, accounting for most confirmed cases and fatalities. Officials have observed that many new infections lack any known connection to existing patients, emphasizing the urgent need for quicker case identification and contact monitoring. Surveillance efforts have been expanded to identify infections earlier and facilitate rapid patient transfer to treatment
