A coalition of international researchers concluded that extreme heat, rather than solely low rainfall, is the main factor driving the exceptionally dry environment. Following a historic heatwave recorded in June, the region is now experiencing parched rivers, strict water restrictions, and devastating wildfires. The recent study indicates that the hotter climate of today accelerates moisture loss from soils, lakes, and rivers, significantly increasing the likelihood of bone dry conditions. Although rainfall was below average during the spring season, climate-driven heat ultimately intensified the drought’s severity.

    Extreme heat reduces regional soil moisture and limits the water availability across the globe.

    The World Weather Attribution group released a study explaining how rising temperatures actively deplete natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not mainly caused by low rainfalls but by a warmer atmosphere that causes more moisture deficits on land. This dynamic means that drought risk continues to grow even in areas where rainfall patterns have remained relatively stable. Scientists clarify that a warmer atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor for every one degree Celsius increase in temperature. This enhanced capacity directly promotes greater evaporation from soils and vegetation across the landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and advanced computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate to a scenario 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their findings show that extremely dry soils are now five times more likely in western Europe than in a climate without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the likelihood of these soil moisture deficits has increased by a factor of 11. The analysis also revealed that the exceptionally high evaporative demand observed from April to June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. This means that rainfall shortages that previously would not have caused severe drought now lead to much drier soils.

    Dominik Schumacher, a scientist at ETH Zurich, emphasized the growing tendency for unusual soil drying already evident in spring before summer arrives. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, extracting vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the soil. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created highly conducive conditions for large wildfires. The rapid soil drying primed the land for combustion, contributing to severe fires across multiple nations. The analysis confirms that climate change exacerbating drought in europe is shifting traditional weather patterns into highly dangerous cycles.

    The agricultural industry faces unprecedented pressure due to widespread soil moisture loss. Drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, leading to historic crop failures across borders. France is projected to record its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signaling a major disruption to regional food production. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further endangering the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These significant domestic shortfalls, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, could drive up food prices and disproportionately impact low-income households.

    Hydrological impacts are intensifying economic damage, with unusually low river levels disrupting vital cargo transport networks. Major shipping interruptions along key waterways highlight the increasing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced flow in major rivers directly threatens energy generation in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that the recent period was the hottest June recorded in western Europe. Many nations are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential use of drinking water to conserve dwindling supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, these drought conditions could become even more common. Experts stress that the current intense evaporative conditions are occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, highlighting the immediate dangers posed by current emission levels. Should global temperatures increase to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative conditions could double. Without swift and substantial reductions in emissions, specialists caution that europe faces a future of increasingly scorching and dry summers, with ongoing risks of severe droughts.
