Ottawa, Canada / RankWire.AI / – The latest official economic figures from the nation, released on Friday, confirm that the Canadian economy experienced a 0.3 percent growth in May, marking a continuation of the economic recovery for a second straight month and surpassing earlier government projections. Statistics Canada’s monthly Gross Domestic Product data shows that real output grew in 13 of the 20 primary industrial sectors, supported by widespread gains in goods-producing industries and sustained demand within services. The actual monthly growth outpaced the preliminary flash estimate of 0.1 percent, fueling positive momentum for the economy after April’s revised growth of 0.6 percent.

The expansion in May was mainly driven by a 1.0 percent increase in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction sector, marking its second consecutive month of sector-wide growth. Higher crude oil extraction volumes throughout May resulted from increased production at Alberta’s bitumen sites and deferred routine spring maintenance. Support activities related to oil and gas extraction increased by 9.8 percent, marking the seventh month in a row of expansion. Additionally, transportation and warehousing activity rose by 0.3 percent, supported by higher pipeline throughput transporting natural gas for export and increased domestic freight movement.

The real estate and rental services sector also played a role in the economic growth seen in May, with activity in offices of real estate agents and brokers jumping 5.1 percent, the largest single-month increase for that subsector since October 2024. Resale housing activity picked up in major urban markets like Toronto, boosting transaction volume and leasing income. Meanwhile, goods-producing industries experienced a 0.6 percent overall increase, driven by solid monthly gains in construction of 0.8 percent, manufacturing of 0.7 percent, and utility production of 0.7 percent.

Canadian Economic Growth Accelerates to 0.3 Percent in May, Supporting Second Quarter Recovery

During May, service industries grew by 0.2 percent, marking a fourth consecutive month of overall expansion for the sector. The public sector aggregate, including education, healthcare, and public administration, expanded by 0.3 percent. Finance and insurance activities contributed positively, alongside spectator sports, which experienced increased attendance and broadcast revenue as Canadian professional hockey teams advanced through playoff rounds. Overall industrial data indicated that service output maintained steady momentum across both public and private commercial sectors.

Preliminary guidance from national statistical officials suggests that real GDP grew an additional 0.2 percent in June, led by wholesale trade, retail, and financial services. Combining these monthly figures, CIBC economists estimate that annualized second-quarter growth is approximately 3.4 percent, exceeding the 2.5 percent forecast by the Bank of Canada. Senior economist Andrew Grantham stated that the strong second-quarter data confirms the Canadian economy’s 0.3 percent growth in May and effectively dismisses discussions of a broader technical recession.

Oil and Gas Sector Boosted by Deferred Maintenance Work in Alberta

Despite the acceleration seen in the second quarter, analysts at BMO Financial Group anticipate a slowdown in economic output growth during the latter half of the year. Chief economist Doug Porter noted that while the May report demonstrates economic resilience amidst recent uncertainties, ongoing trade tensions and rising fuel costs may limit third-quarter expansion. Nevertheless, the positive GDP trend offers significant flexibility for monetary policymakers as they assess interest rate settings following the decision to keep the benchmark rate at 2.25 per cent earlier this month.

Representatives from the Business Council of Canada pointed out that earlier quarterly contractions were mainly due to temporary volatility rather than long-term economic decline. Marc Desormeaux, vice president of policy at the council, emphasized that robust fundamentals in resource extraction and manufacturing have sustained the nation’s bottom line. As official second-quarter GDP figures are finalized and expected at the end of August, financial markets currently assign a nearly 97 percent probability that the Bank of Canada will hold its benchmark borrowing rate steady at the September policy meeting.
