NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – During an investigation into a South Bronx outbreak, New York City health officials identified Legionella DNA in a Yankee Stadium cooling tower. By Tuesday night, the city had confirmed 11 cases of Legionnaires’ disease. One individual succumbed to the illness, while three patients remained hospitalized. The New York City Health Department reported preliminary positive PCR results from 10 out of 24 sampled cooling towers across ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.

NYC finds Legionella DNA in Yankee Stadium cooling tower
Yankee Stadium is included in New York City’s South Bronx cooling tower investigation.

The affected regions include parts of the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. Health officials sampled cooling towers while investigating potential environmental sources of the infections. PCR testing can detect genetic material from Legionella bacteria but does not confirm whether bacteria are alive. Culture testing, which can determine bacterial viability, may take up to two weeks, according to officials.

The Yankees stated that the ongoing outbreak has not been linked to Yankee Stadium. The team noted that its cooling towers, installed in 2024, are routinely tested for water quality. A Legionella test on August 20 yielded a negative result. The team also performed weekly water quality and bacteriological indicator tests on August 26, September 2, and September 9, prior to the collection of the stadium sample by city investigators on September 11.

Stadium cooling system disinfected as city broadens testing efforts

All 10 cooling towers with initial positive PCR findings were mandated by city health officials to undergo comprehensive cleaning and disinfection. The New York City Health Department required this work to be completed by September 14. Health Commissioner Alister Martin later confirmed that remediation had been carried out on each tower with concerning results. The Yankees explained that their stadium cooling tower was drained, cleaned, and disinfected on September 13 following the city’s notification of the preliminary detection.

Legionnaires’ disease, a bacterial pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, typically infects individuals when they breathe in tiny water droplets containing the bacteria. It usually does not spread from person to person. Symptoms may include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Health officials advised anyone who lived, worked, or visited the South Bronx area since late August to seek medical care if they develop flu-like symptoms.

Authorities remain investigating the outbreak’s origin

According to health officials, eight of the 10 cooling towers with preliminary positive results satisfied the city’s 31-day Legionella testing requirement. Two other properties had not provided the necessary testing documentation at the time of the findings. Investigators are actively reviewing laboratory results and case data from the South Bronx cluster. This includes examining cooling towers at Yankee Stadium and other nearby properties as they work to pinpoint the source linked to the confirmed cases.

The Health Department reassured residents in ZIP codes 10451 and 10456 that they can safely continue using tap water, showers, and air conditioning as usual. Officials also clarified that entering buildings associated with the 10 cooling towers does not pose an additional risk. The Yankees stated that health authorities have not requested the postponement of any games at Yankee Stadium. As laboratory culture testing continues on samples collected during the South Bronx investigation, city officials keep monitoring the situation.
