HONG KONG / RankWire.AI / – Alibaba Group has announced the pricing of an HK$80 billion share placement aimed at boosting its investments in artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure. The Chinese tech giant will issue 710 million new ordinary shares at HK$112.70 each. This offering is valued at approximately US$10.2 billion based on current exchange rates. Alibaba anticipates the transaction will close on Aug. 26, pending customary closing conditions. The company has earmarked the proceeds specifically for investments across its AI activities.

Alibaba raises HK$80 billion for AI and cloud growth
Alibaba is expanding AI and cloud spending through a major Hong Kong equity placement.

Alibaba stated that all net proceeds from this placement will be used to enhance its comprehensive artificial intelligence capabilities. The company’s planned expenditure includes expanding and upgrading computing infrastructure to support AI products and cloud services. As demand for computing capacity surges, Alibaba Cloud has become a vital component of the company’s technological operations. Additionally, the firm has increased its investments in models, data processing, and related infrastructure, reflecting the growth driven by higher revenue from AI-related products and services.

The purpose of this placement is to target non-U.S. investors outside the United States through offshore transactions. The issue price of HK$112.70 offers an 8.4% discount compared to Alibaba’s HK$123 closing price on Friday. During early Monday trading, Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares experienced a sharp decline, dropping as much as 10% to HK$110.10. The company also maintains a New York listing through American depositary shares under the BABA ticker. Upon completion, the new shares will increase the company’s equity base.

Rising AI investments driven by cloud service demand

Alibaba has already ramped up capital expenditures as part of expanding its computing capacity for artificial intelligence. During the quarter ending June 30, capital expenditure reached RMB67.68 billion, roughly US$10 billion. This represents a 75% increase from RMB38.68 billion during the same period last year. The surge is attributed to ongoing investments in AI infrastructure, growing demand for computing power, and rising chip component prices. The increased spending coincides with another quarter of rapid growth in Alibaba’s cloud segment.

In the latest quarter, Alibaba reported revenue of RMB268.95 billion, approximately US$39.6 billion, marking a 9% increase year-over-year. Revenue from AI Cloud and Compute Services reached RMB48.44 billion, or about US$7.1 billion. This sector grew at an annual rate of 45% during the period. Revenue from AI-related products hit RMB12.38 billion and continued to post triple-digit growth for the 12th consecutive quarter. These figures highlight the substantial activity already underway within Alibaba’s AI and cloud divisions.

Funding effort aligns with a three-year investment pledge

The HK$80 billion share placement follows a significant investment commitment announced by Alibaba in February 2025. The company revealed plans to allocate at least RMB380 billion over three years for artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure development. This planned expenditure exceeds its combined spending in these areas over the past decade. The current share sale provides additional funds specifically dedicated to expanding Alibaba’s full-stack AI capabilities. The proceeds will support an ongoing investment program that predates this offering.

Increased capital spending has coincided with reduced quarterly profits and substantial cash outflows. For the June quarter, Alibaba reported net income of RMB10.44 billion, a 75% decline from the previous year. Free cash flow showed a net outflow of RMB44.67 billion, mainly due to heightened investments in cloud infrastructure. The latest equity offering injects fresh capital while Alibaba continues its previously announced AI and cloud investment initiatives. The closing remains scheduled for Aug. 26, according to the stated terms.
