The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7. Reserves had been $56.2939 billion at July’s close, representing an increase of approximately $920.6 million or 1.6%. This marks the first occasion when Egypt’s official reserve holdings have surpassed $57 billion.

The August data also signified a continued upward trend observed throughout 2026. Reserves stood at $52.5938 billion in January, the start of the year, and grew month-by-month, reaching $52.7455 billion in February, $52.8306 billion in March, $53.0092 billion in April, and $53.1342 billion in May. The pace of growth picked up mid-year. Reserves jumped from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June, then advanced again to $56.2939 billion in July, culminating in the August record. These three consecutive monthly gains contributed over $4 billion to the total. Compared to August 2025, the latest reserve level is approximately $7.96 billion higher, translating to an annual growth rate of roughly 16.2%.
Remittances from Egyptians Abroad Boost Foreign Currency Inflows
During the 2025/2026 fiscal year, remittances sent home by Egyptians working overseas also achieved a new high. The Central Bank of Egypt indicated these inflows amounted to approximately $47.3 billion, a rise of 29.6% from about $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. Specifically, June remittances reached around $4.2 billion, a 15.6% increase over the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.
Egypt’s latest balance of payments figures cover the first nine months of the fiscal year 2025/2026. The overall deficit for this period, from July to March, was $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, the capital and financial account posted net inflows totaling $9.9 billion, whereas the current account registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These statistics provide the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external financial position before the August reserve update.
Continuous Monthly Reserve Growth Maintains Momentum in 2026
Throughout 2026, the reserve figures have consecutively set new nominal highs. Reserves crossed the $55 billion mark in June, exceeded $56 billion in July, and in August, the figure surpassed $57 billion for the first time. Egypt now reports three straight months at month-end with reserves above $55 billion. The August total is more than 10% higher than the $51.4516 billion recorded at December’s close of 2025.
This latest data indicates Egypt’s net international reserves have reached their highest ever documented level. The upward trend has persisted without interruption since the beginning of 2026, with every month from January to August showing an increase over the previous month. The August reserve figure remains provisional according to the central bank’s reporting standards. Nonetheless, the available data clearly reflect a steady rise in Egypt’s reserve holdings during the first eight months of this year.
